Plan Every Wisconsin Fishing Date Before Your License or Season Runs Out

Wisconsin’s fishing license year, general inland season, trout dates, species harvest dates and Free Fishing Weekends do not all begin or end on the same day.

This practical calendar shows when to purchase the next license, when major seasons open or close, which Free Fishing dates require no license and what you should verify before each trip.

Quick calendar answer

What Dates Matter Most for a Wisconsin Fishing License?

The current Wisconsin fishing license cycle runs from April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027. An annual license from the previous license year should not be used after March 31.

The statewide 2026–2027 general inland fishing season opened May 2, 2026 and runs through March 7, 2027, but individual species and waters may have shorter, longer or year-round seasons.

The remaining Free Fishing Weekend listed within the current season calendar is January 16–17, 2027. A fishing license and trout or salmon stamp are not required during an official Free Fishing Weekend, but bag limits, length limits, seasons and waterbody restrictions still apply.

Do not confuse the two calendars: the fishing license year begins April 1, but Wisconsin’s traditional general inland opening day is the first Saturday in May. Possessing a valid license does not automatically mean every species is open.

Current planning position: 2026–2027 cycle

As of the July 21, 2026 verification date, the April license reset, May general opener and June Free Fishing Weekend have passed. Important upcoming dates include the September lake sturgeon hook-and-line period, the October trout closing date, the December musky closing date, January 2027 Free Fishing Weekend and the March 2027 license renewal deadline.

April 4, 2026 General inland trout harvest opened for streams, springs and spring ponds Open period Carry the required Inland Trout Stamp unless an exemption applies.
May 2, 2026 General inland fishing opener and inland lake trout opener Season underway Check species-specific limits instead of relying only on the general opener.

Oct. 15, 2026 General inland trout season closes Upcoming Stop targeting trout where the season closes unless another specific rule allows it.
Dec. 31, 2026 Statewide inland musky harvest season closes Upcoming Check open-water and boundary-water rules before a late-season trip.
Jan. 16–17, 2027 Winter Free Fishing Weekend Next free weekend Fish without a license or trout/salmon stamp while following all other regulations.
March 7, 2027 General inland fishing season closes for several listed species Future Review year-round waters and species-specific exceptions before fishing afterward.
March 31, 2027 2026–2027 annual fishing license year ends Renewal deadline Purchase the new license before fishing on or after April 1, 2027.
Calendar-saving tip: add four reminders to your phone—March 20 for renewal preparation, April 1 for the new license year, the species opener you plan to fish and the final day of that species’ season.
Important distinction

License Year, Regulation Year and Fishing Season Are Not the Same

Many anglers assume that buying a license means every Wisconsin fishing season is open. That is not how the calendar works.

🪪

License year

The annual Wisconsin fishing license cycle runs from April 1 through March 31 of the following year.

Main question: Is your fishing privilege still active?

📘

Regulation year

New regulation materials generally become effective with the April 1 license cycle.

Main question: Are you reading the current rule year?

🎣

Species season

Each species or waterbody can have its own opening date, closing date, harvest period and exceptions.

Main question: Is the exact species open at your exact location?

Example: an angler may purchase a new annual license on April 1, 2026, but the statewide general inland fishing opener does not occur until May 2, 2026. The April license is valid, but closed-season restrictions still control what can be targeted or harvested.

Four checks before every fishing trip

  1. Check the license year.
Make sure your privilege covers the day you will fish.
  2. Check the species season.
Confirm that the species is open for harvest or catch-and-release.
  3. Check the waterbody.
Search the lake, river, stream, pool or boundary-water section.
  4. Check your fishing method.
Hook-and-line, hand fishing, bow fishing and sturgeon methods may use different dates.
Practical renewal workflow

How to Renew or Buy Your Wisconsin Fishing License for the New Cycle

Wisconsin fishing privileges are purchased through the Go Wild system, participating sales agents or DNR service centers. Complete the process before fishing after March 31.

  1. Check your current privilege in Go Wild.
Sign in and review the license year, product name and expiration date attached to your customer account.
  2. Mark March 31 as the annual deadline.
Do not assume that a previous annual fishing license remains valid after the end of the license year.
  3. Choose the correct product.
Compare annual, one-day, junior, senior, family, first-time-buyer and nonresident options.
  4. Confirm residency and age.
Use resident, junior or senior pricing only when you satisfy the official eligibility requirements.
  5. Add only the privileges your trip requires.
Trout, Great Lakes salmon/trout and sturgeon fishing can require additional stamps or licenses.
  6. Review the license year before paying.
Confirm that the product covers the intended fishing date and that your personal information is correct.
  7. Save accepted proof of purchase.
Keep your license information available during the trip and consider carrying a printed backup.
  8. Check the new regulations separately.
A successful purchase confirms your privilege—not the season, bag limit or legal fishing method.

Current standard prices

Wisconsin Fishing License Costs to Budget for Renewal

The following standard fishing-license fees were checked against Wisconsin DNR’s current fishing license page. Eligibility and available products should be confirmed in Go Wild before payment.

License product Resident fee Nonresident fee Calendar use
Annual fishing $20 $55 Best for repeated trips during the April–March license cycle
First-time buyer $5 $28.75 For eligible new or qualifying returning anglers
One-day fishing $8 $15 For a single planned fishing day
Four-day fishing Not listed as the standard resident product $29 For a visiting angler’s long weekend
15-day fishing Review available resident options $33 For a longer nonresident trip
Junior fishing, age 16–17 $7 Check current catalog For eligible teenage anglers
Senior fishing, age 65+ $7 No general matching benefit listed For eligible Wisconsin residents
Inland Trout Stamp $10 $10 Add when the planned inland trout activity requires it
Great Lakes Salmon/Trout Stamp $10 $10 Add for applicable Great Lakes salmon or trout fishing
Budgeting shortcut: a resident planning three or more one-day trips should compare the $20 annual license with repeated $8 one-day purchases. A nonresident should compare one-day, four-day, 15-day and annual options using the complete trip calendar.

Wisconsin Free Fishing Weekend Dates and Rules

Wisconsin normally schedules Free Fishing Weekends during the third full weekend in January and the first full weekend in June.

Completed

January 17–18, 2026

This was the 2026 Winter Free Fishing Weekend.

Anglers could fish without purchasing a fishing license, Inland Trout Stamp or Great Lakes Salmon/Trout Stamp.

Completed

June 6–7, 2026

This was the 2026 summer Free Fishing Weekend.

It offered families, residents and nonresidents an opportunity to try fishing without the normal license requirement.

Next listed weekend

January 16–17, 2027

This is the next Free Fishing Weekend listed on the current 2026–2027 Wisconsin fishing season calendar.

Confirm the date again before travel in case official information changes.

Annual pattern

First full June weekend

The DNR states that summer Free Fishing Weekend is normally held on the first full weekend in June.

Wait for the official DNR announcement before publishing or relying on a future exact date.

What Free Fishing Weekend removes

  • Normal Wisconsin fishing license requirement for residents and nonresidents
  • Normal Inland Trout Stamp requirement
  • Normal Great Lakes Salmon/Trout Stamp requirement

What Free Fishing Weekend does not remove

  • Open and closed fishing seasons
  • Daily bag and possession limits
  • Minimum, maximum or protected-slot length limits
  • Species restrictions and waterbody-specific rules
  • Legal fishing-method requirements
  • Boat-safety and aquatic invasive species rules
  • Special licenses or authorizations not covered by the Free Fishing Weekend announcement
Free does not mean unrestricted: the weekend removes normal license and stamp requirements. It does not turn a closed species into an open species or increase the number of fish you may keep.

Free Fishing Weekend preparation plan

  1. Choose a legal waterbody.
Search for shore access, a fishing pier, a public boat launch or a beginner-friendly lake.
  2. Check the species calendar.
Make sure the fish you plan to target are open on the Free Fishing Weekend dates.
  3. Review bag and length limits.
Save the relevant waterbody rule before leaving home.
  4. Borrow equipment if necessary.
Wisconsin lists tackle-loaner locations, but hours vary and should be confirmed first.
  5. Carry safety gear.
For winter fishing, verify ice conditions and remember that no ice should be treated as completely safe.
  6. Buy a license afterward if you enjoyed fishing.
Use Go Wild to purchase the correct product before your next non-free date.

Why the general calendar may not apply

Special Waterbody, Boundary-Water and Species Exceptions

Wisconsin’s statewide calendar is a starting point. The final rule may change because of the exact water, species, zone, fishing method or temporary order.

📍

Named-water exception

A specific lake, river, flowage, stream or pool may have a different opening date, closing date, bag limit or protected size range.

🗺️

Boundary-water exception

Mississippi River, St. Croix River, Great Lakes and Wisconsin-Michigan waters can follow separate boundary or outlying-water regulations.

🐟

Species exception

Smallmouth bass, trout, musky, sturgeon and other species may use dates that differ from the general May opener.

🎯

Method exception

Hook-and-line, bow fishing, hand fishing, spearing and other methods can have different seasons or authorization requirements.

⚠️

Emergency rule

Temporary or emergency rules may change a season, limit or possession requirement after printed materials are released.

🪧

Posted notice

Signs at landings, dams, refuges and access points may identify closures or local restrictions that require immediate attention.

Exact-water regulation search method

  1. Record the complete water name.
Include the river pool, lake, flowage, tributary or nearby dam.
  2. Record the county and zone.
Similar water names may appear in more than one Wisconsin county.
  3. Search the official regulation resource.
Look for the exact water and target species.
  4. Compare season, size and bag rules.
Do not stop after finding only the opening date.
  5. Look for current notices.
Review new regulations, emergency rules and signs at the access location.

Calendar mistakes that cause problems

Waiting for the May opener to renew

The new license year begins April 1. Anglers using an April opportunity may need the new license before the general May opener.

Assuming a license lasts 12 months from purchase

Annual license-year privileges follow the April 1–March 31 cycle rather than a personal rolling anniversary.

Using last year’s regulation screenshot

A saved PDF or image can become outdated after the new regulation year begins.

Confusing Free Fishing Weekend with an open season

The license waiver does not authorize fishing for a species that is closed on that date.

Planning only around opening day

Closing dates, special harvest windows and possession rules matter just as much as the opener.

Ignoring time-of-day language

Some trout and other seasons specify a 5 a.m. opening time rather than beginning at midnight.

Not checking both zones

Northern and Southern Zone bass calendars can differ, especially for smallmouth harvest.

Keeping an expired privilege screenshot

A screenshot of an old license does not make the previous license year valid.

Expert habit: repeat the complete regulation check whenever you change the trip date, target species, county, waterbody or fishing method—even when you fished the same general area earlier in the year.

Wisconsin Fishing License Calendar FAQs

When does a Wisconsin annual fishing license expire?

A Wisconsin annual fishing license follows the April 1 through March 31 license cycle. A 2026–2027 annual license is valid through March 31, 2027, unless the specific product states otherwise.

When should I renew my Wisconsin fishing license?

Prepare for renewal during March and purchase the new license before fishing on or after April 1. Buying before your first spring trip helps prevent an expired-license mistake.

Does a Wisconsin fishing license renew automatically?

Do not assume that a previous fishing license automatically continues into the next license year. Check your active privileges in Go Wild and purchase the correct new product when needed.

When is Wisconsin’s 2026–2027 general inland fishing season?

The general inland fishing season runs from May 2, 2026 through March 7, 2027. Species-specific and waterbody-specific seasons can differ from these general dates.

When is the next Wisconsin Free Fishing Weekend?

The next Free Fishing Weekend listed on the current Wisconsin DNR season calendar is January 16–17, 2027. Confirm the official page again before traveling.

Do I need a trout or salmon stamp during Free Fishing Weekend?

No fishing license, Inland Trout Stamp or Great Lakes Salmon/Trout Stamp is normally required during an official Free Fishing Weekend. All seasons, bag limits, length limits and species restrictions remain in effect.

Can I fish in April before the general May opener?

Some April fishing opportunities may be open, including certain trout or year-round waters, but the exact species and waterbody rules must allow fishing. A new license may still be required beginning April 1.

Why is the license date different from the fishing-season date?

The license year controls whether your fishing privilege is valid, while species and waterbody seasons control when particular fish may be targeted or harvested. Both calendars must be checked.

Do children need a Wisconsin fishing license?

Wisconsin DNR states that children age 15 and younger may fish without a license. They must still follow seasons, bag limits, length limits and all other applicable regulations.

Where can I buy a Wisconsin fishing license in person?

Fishing licenses are available at participating sales agents and Wisconsin DNR service centers. Use the official sales-location map or service-center page and confirm hours before visiting.
